ISLAND MUSIC CENTERDB's illusions with Digital Audio!
This little audio illusion is an example of a tone series (originally called sheppard tones after the discoverer) that has the quality of going - well, nowhere. Just put the mouse over any pad to hear a tone - try starting on the far step of the circle then touching each pad in a clockwise direction to play its tone. As you proceed around the circle of steps, the tone appears to step down at each pad, until you get back to where you started - but the tones each went "down" didn't they? It's a strange sensation, but if you listen carefully, you'll probably hear what's going on... If you are intrigued by this effect, then why not join our Digital Audio class and find out how sound works and how we hear it.
