Colleen McElroy – Flute
Flutist Colleen McElroy enjoys an active career performing and teaching in Seattle, WA. Colleen is a member of Emissary Quartet, a flute ensemble dedicated to commissioning and performing new works and advocating for the flute quartet as a valuable and dynamic means of artistic expression. EQ is excited to be premiering a new work by Annika Socolovsky this fall in New York City as well as performing at the National Flute Association Convention in San Diego this August. In 2015, Colleen was awarded first prize in both the Seattle Flute Society Young Artist Competition and the Flutissimo! Solo Artist Competition. Colleen holds a BM (Performance) and BA (Art History) from the University of Washington and completed her MM in Performance at Boston University.
Colleen began teaching privately as a high school student. Throughout her musical training, Colleen has been active in arts education and outreach, by volunteering as a mentor for Seattle Music Partners, working in Soundbridge at the Seattle Symphony, and developing her own classes and programs with various small ensembles. For the past three summers, she has been invited to work with Iris Ingram’s flute studio in Lake Stevens, WA for their annual flute summer camp, and while a student at Boston University, Colleen coached non-major undergraduate chamber ensembles.
Colleen aims to help each student become a well-rounded musician with a thorough understanding of musical concepts that will enrich their experience of music long after their lessons. Her goal is to empower each student to reach their highest potential as a flutist and musician, and to have fun in the process! Flute lessons include development of proper technique and tone, study of music theory and history, musicality and phrasing, exploration of the flute repertoire, and performance opportunities. Private lessons are tailored to each student’s unique goals and learning style.
